SENATE REVERSES CONTROVERSIAL RULE, OPENS DOOR FOR UZODIMMA’S REPORTED SENATE PRESIDENCY AMBITION
Fresh political calculations have emerged in the National Assembly after the Senate reversed its controversial amendment to the Standing Orders that had restricted eligibility for the office of Senate President and other principal positions.
The reversal followed a motion reportedly sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and adopted under the supervision of Deputy Senate President Jubril Barau.
The earlier amendment had limited eligibility for principal offices to senators who served at least two terms, including the immediate preceding term — a move that sharply reduced the number of lawmakers qualified to contest for the Senate Presidency in the incoming Assembly.
With the sudden reversal, the field has now been thrown wide open again, allowing several previously disqualified politicians to re-enter the race for top legislative positions.
The development is widely seen as a significant boost to the reported Senate Presidency ambition of Hope Uzodimma, whose possible return to the Senate ahead of 2027 has remained a subject of intense political speculation.
