Fresh political tension has erupted in Rivers State as a youth group has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, demanding the immediate commencement of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The group, led by Comrade Stewart Ikechukwu, accused the governor of failing to present the state budget, describing the alleged delay as a serious breach affecting governance and development across the state.
In a strongly worded statement, the youth body expressed frustration over what it called the governor’s “nonchalant attitude” toward critical governance responsibilities, insisting that the continued budget impasse has created uncertainty within the state’s administrative structure.
The group also tendered an apology to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over the deepening political crisis currently rocking Rivers State.
According to the statement, the youths pledged total political support for any future candidate endorsed by Wike, signaling continued alignment with the former governor’s political camp amid the prolonged power struggle in the state.
The ultimatum further intensifies the already volatile relationship between Governor Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly, where disputes over legislative authority, political control, and governance have continued to dominate the state’s political landscape.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Rivers State Government nor the Assembly leadership had officially responded to the demand by the youth group.
Political observers warn that the latest development could deepen tensions in the oil-rich state as impeachment threats, factional loyalty, and institutional confrontations continue to escalate ahead of the next electoral cycle.
