Nwabali rejoins Chippa United after five months of quiting club

Five months after leaving the Premier Soccer League team, Stanley Nwabali, the custodian for the Super Eagles, has finalised his return to South African club Chippa United ahead of the 2026–2027 season.

After leaving the Eastern Cape club in February 2026, the 30-year-old hasn’t played competitive football for several months. His participation with Nigeria’s senior national team was also impacted by his absence from regular club activity.

On Sunday, Chippa United used its official social media channels to confirm the goalkeeper’s homecoming.

“Chippa United Football Club is delighted to welcome @nwabali32 back to the Chilli Boys,” the club wrote in a tweet to fans welcoming Nwabali back.

“After taking time away, Stanley Nwabali returns to the Eastern Cape, and we are pleased to welcome him back to the club,” Chippa United said in a separate statement.

The Nigerian international, who initially joined Chippa United in 2022 and became one of the team’s most important players, is starting a second stint.

A new chance for the Super Eagles custodian
Following his outstanding performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was instrumental in the Super Eagles’ runners-up finish, Nwabali’s stature increased dramatically.

However, he was unable to play regularly in the first team after leaving Chippa United earlier this year, which limited his chances of continuing to be involved at the club level. His status with the national team during that time was also impacted by the absence of competitive games.

With regular playing time in the South African top division, his return presents the seasoned custodian with a chance to revive his career.

Nwabali will be expected to contend for the top spot and assist Chippa United in turning things around in the Premier Soccer League as the new season draws near.

As Nigeria gets ready for future international matches, the goalie will also be hoping that consistent club appearances would increase his chances of being called up to the Super Eagles camp.
