NIGERIAN SENATORS MAKE U-TURN, NOW PUSH FOR MANDATORY ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION OF RESULTS

ABUJA — Fresh political debate has erupted after several Nigerian senators reportedly began pushing for mandatory electronic transmission of election results directly from polling units to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) server ahead of the 2027 elections.

The development has attracted attention because many of the same lawmakers had previously supported efforts to make electronic transmission optional instead of compulsory during debates on electoral reforms.

Political observers say the sudden change in position may not be unconnected to growing internal crises within major political parties, especially after some serving lawmakers allegedly lost influence or failed to secure party support ahead of future elections.

Critics have accused some politicians of only supporting electoral transparency after becoming victims of the same political system they once defended.
