NAFDAC busts illegal herbal product factory in Lagos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has uncovered an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State.

The agency disclosed this in a statement published on its verified X handle on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the operation followed a report published by The Guardian concerning herbal products bearing falsified NAFDAC registration numbers.

The agency said its investigative team conducted surveillance and subsequently “discovered three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters bearing NAFDAC Registration Number A7-1827L.”

It added, “Verification through NAFDAC’s NAPAMS portal revealed that the registration number belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, confirming its fraudulent use on the herbal products.

“The company’s managing director/chief executive officer was absent during the operation, while the company manager was arrested for further interrogation.”

The agency urged members of the public to provide credible information about suspected illegal manufacturing activities through its call centres on 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322, or via email at reforms@nafdac.gov.ng.

This came less than a week after the agency uncovered a suspected counterfeit drinks factory at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos State.

NAFDAC said two suspects were arrested in connection with the production and repackaging of fake alcoholic and energy drinks.

The operation, NAFDAC stated, exposed unhygienic production facilities where suspects allegedly relabelled empty bottles of expensive wines with counterfeit labels and refilled them with adulterated alcoholic drinks.
