Atiku Engages U.S. Lawmakers on Alleged Threats to Independent National Electoral Commission Integrity

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has initiated discussions with members of the United States Congress over concerns about Nigeria’s electoral process, including allegations of attempts to suppress opposition voices ahead of the next presidential election.
Atiku, who is a leading presidential contender under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is said to be raising issues surrounding the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as well as broader concerns about election integrity in the country.
The development was disclosed by Washington-based lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C. in a statement shared on social media platform X. According to the firm, the former vice president has begun direct engagements with key U.S. lawmakers and stakeholders to highlight what he described as troubling developments within Nigeria’s political landscape.
In the statement, the firm noted that discussions with U.S. Congress members are focused on ensuring transparency in Nigeria’s electoral system and addressing what it termed “ongoing efforts by the current Nigerian government to silence opposition voices and influence the outcome of the upcoming presidential election.”
The statement further indicated that the situation in Nigeria has drawn the attention of influential figures in the United States, with growing concern about the potential implications of any electoral irregularities.
“Congress and key U.S. stakeholders are very concerned,” the firm stated. “Given Nigeria’s role in global energy supply, any actions by the current government to undermine the credibility of the presidential election could have far-reaching consequences for both the global and U.S. economies.”
It also warned that political instability in Nigeria could exacerbate existing security and economic challenges, not only within the country but across the wider region.
While Atiku’s camp has consistently raised concerns about the fairness of Nigeria’s electoral environment, there has been no immediate response from the federal government or INEC regarding the latest development.
Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, plays a strategic role in global energy markets. Analysts say that any instability arising from disputed elections could have ripple effects beyond its borders.
