US Creates New Task Force To Tighten Restrictions On Iran

The United States has established a new military task force to expand restrictions on Iran’s movement of weapons, sanctioned goods and other materials through land routes and the Caspian Sea.

The task force, named Iron Gate, is being set up by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) as Washington seeks to extend its existing naval blockade of Iran to overland trade routes.

According to Reuters, the unit will be based in Tampa, Florida, and will coordinate with other US government agencies to monitor and restrict the movement of advanced weapons, dual-use goods and materials linked to Iran’s military activities.

Its responsibilities will also include targeting illicit revenue streams that Washington believes help Tehran finance its military operations and replenish its weapons supplies.

CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said the initiative would strengthen cooperation between government agencies and further limit Iran’s ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons factories and replenish its military capabilities.

The development comes after months of a US naval blockade aimed at restricting Iran’s oil exports and other maritime trade.

CENTCOM estimates that the naval operation has prevented Iran from exporting more than $25bn worth of crude oil.

The establishment of Task Force Iron Gate marks an expansion of Washington’s efforts to restrict Iran’s access to international trade networks as the conflict between both countries continues.
