Three die, seven injured in Ogun road crashes

Three persons have been killed, and seven others injured in two separate road crashes along Sagamu-Ikorodu Expressway and the Ota–Idiroko Road in Ogun State.

The accidents occurred on Saturday at the Kam Steel axis of the Sagamu–Ikorodu Expressway and the Agarawu, Winners axis of the Ota–Idiroko Road.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incidents in a traffic update on Saturday.

Akinbiyi stated that the first accident occurred at the Kam Steel axis of the Sagamu–Ikorodu Highway, leaving a woman dead and two other women with injuries.

He noted that the crash, which occurred at about 4.10pm, reportedly happened when a patrol van emerged from the Kam Steel access road onto the highway and collided with the tricycle, causing it to somersault.

He stated, “The pick-up van came out of the Kam Steel Road into the highway and collided with the tricycle, which somersaulted as a result.

“Eight people were involved; one female adult died while two other female adults sustained varying degrees of injuries.”

He noted that the injured victims were rescued to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, while the body of the deceased was deposited at the same hospital morgue.

The TRACE spokesperson noted that two persons, a man and a woman, died while five others sustained injuries in another accident at Agarawu, Winners axis of the Ota–Idiroko Road.

Akinbiyi stated that the accident, which occurred at about 3.25pm, involved a yellow Howo truck and a TVS tricycle.

He added that the crash was caused by brake failure, which reportedly made the truck driver lose control.

“According to the eyewitness account, the brake of the Howo truck failed, and the driver lost control and collided with the tricycle.

“Nine people were involved; two persons, including a male adult and a female adult, died while seven others were injured,” he stated.

Akinbiyi said the injured victims had been taken to hospital before the arrival of rescue officials.

He added that one of the deceased was claimed by her relatives, while the other body was deposited at the General Hospital morgue, Ifo.

Akinbiyi said the intervention of TRACE operatives and other emergency responders helped to restore traffic flow at both accident scenes.

“While TRACE, FRSC and the Police commiserate with families of the deceased, motorists are again admonished to make safety their watchword by servicing and adequately maintaining their vehicles as and when due in view of the attendant consequences of non-compliance,” he concluded.
