According to security analyst Bakatsine, the incident occurred shortly after the victim passed Mayanchi while returning from Gusau, along a known flashpoint route for armed attacks.

Attempts to obtain police comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

SaharaReporters’ calls and messages to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Zamfara State Command, Yazid Abubakar, seeking comments on the incident were unsuccessful, as he was unavailable to respond.

SaharaReporters had reported in February how armed bandits reportedly imposed a levy of approximately ₦10 million on residents of Mada District in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State, with at least one person reportedly shot during fresh attacks on two villages.

According to Bakatsine, the incidents affected Totari and Gyattawa villages, where residents were said to have been dispersed following the invasions.

Explaining what followed the demand for payment, the security expert said, “According to local sources, villagers who were unable to raise the demanded sum were violently attacked and forced to flee their homes.”

Describing the incident at Gyattawa village, he said, “At least one person was shot during the attack and is feared dead, although official confirmation is still awaited.”
