Top University VC Dies 24 Hours After Inauguration

Professor Cater Dike Umeoduagu, the newly inaugurated Vice-Chancellor of Tansian University, Umunya/Oba, Anambra State, has died barely 24 hours after assuming office.

Umeoduagu was inaugurated as the university’s Vice-Chancellor on Friday, October 2, 2026.

However, the Professor of Microbiology reportedly took ill later that night and died in the early hours of Saturday, October 3.

Sources familiar with the incident said he suddenly became unwell around midnight and was pronounced dead at about 2am.

His sudden death has shocked the university community, coming just hours after he formally assumed the leadership of the institution.

Before his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, Umeoduagu served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Tansian University.

He was also a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, where he represented Aguata 1 Constituency during the Seventh Assembly.

His tenure as Deputy Vice-Chancellor reportedly coincided with some internal challenges and controversies within the university, including disagreements that generated tensions in the institution.

Details of the circumstances surrounding his sudden death remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.

The development has left colleagues, members of the university community, political associates and others who knew the late professor mourning his untimely death.
