Three Policemen Allegedly Extort ₦155,000 From ABU Student on Abuja-Kaduna Expressway
Three police officers have allegedly extorted ₦155,000 from a 400-level Civil Engineering student of Ahmadu Bello University, Abdul Rasheed Isa Bello, on the Abuja–Kaduna Expressway.
The allegation was made by the student’s elder brother, Isa Bello, a chemical engineer, in a post on X on Tuesday.
According to Bello, his younger brother, who is currently undergoing an internship in Abuja, was travelling to Zaria when he was stopped by three police officers at a toll gate near the Kaduna State border.
Bello alleged that the officers ordered the student out of the vehicle and questioned him despite his identification as a university student.
He further claimed that only one of the three officers was wearing a name tag, identifying him as Mohammed Ibrahim.
According to the account, the officers initially demanded ₦200,000 from the student.
Bello said his brother explained that he was an unemployed intern and pleaded with the officers, but they allegedly continued to hold him and directed him to contact his family.
The family subsequently raised and transferred ₦155,000 to an account allegedly provided by the officers.
Bello said his brother was released after the payment was made.
He also shared a copy of the bank transfer receipt, stating that the family has documentation showing the recipient’s details and the exact time the transaction was completed.
Bello has called on the Nigeria Police Force to urgently investigate the allegation, identify the officers deployed to the checkpoint at the time of the incident and determine the involvement of the officer identified as Mohammed Ibrahim and his colleagues.
He also appealed to the police authorities to ensure that the ₦155,000 allegedly obtained from his brother is refunded if the allegation is established.
The post also tagged the Nigeria Police Force and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), drawing attention to the allegation.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Federal Capital Territory Police Command nor the Kaduna State Police Command had publicly responded to the allegation.
