Ondo Govt Strengthens Emergency Response, Distributes Relief Materials and Cash to Victims

 

The Ondo State Government has commenced the distribution of relief materials and cash assistance to victims of natural disasters across the state, reaffirming its commitment to supporting affected residents and helping them recover from the impact of disasters.

The intervention was flagged off on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the Ondo State Emergency Management Agency (ODSEMA) warehouse, Old Owena Mass Transit, opposite Mummy’s Place, off Obaile, Akure, by the Deputy Governor of the state and Chairman of ODSEMA, His Excellency, Dr. Olayide Owolabi Adelami, mni.

The exercise, organised through ODSEMA, saw relief materials distributed to victims of natural disasters from Akure North and Ifedore Local Government Areas, while cash assistance was presented to market women whose shops were recently razed by fire in Ore, Odigbo local government area of the state, as part of the government’s efforts to provide immediate support and cushion the effects of disasters on affected residents.

The intervention underscores the commitment of the Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa-led administration to ensuring that victims of disasters receive timely assistance while strengthening the state’s capacity for effective emergency response and disaster management.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor and Chairman of ODSEMA reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to protecting the lives, property and welfare of the people, noting that government would continue to support residents affected by disasters and provide necessary interventions to enable them recover and rebuild.

Dr. Adelami stressed the importance of strengthening disaster preparedness, resilience and coordinated response mechanisms across the state, while commending ODSEMA and other relevant stakeholders for their continued efforts in responding to emergencies and supporting affected communities.

The Administrative Secretary, Office of the Deputy Governor, Dr. Frederick Orunko, commended the Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa-led administration for its responsiveness and commitment to the welfare of residents, particularly through interventions aimed at alleviating the hardship faced by victims of disasters.

Dr. Orunko said the distribution of relief materials and cash assistance demonstrated the administration’s people-centred approach and its determination to ensure that residents affected by disasters are not left to bear the burden alone. He also urged members of the public to promptly report disasters whenever they occur and always contact ODSEMA through the appropriate channels, stressing that early notification would enable the agency to respond quickly, effectively and minimise loss of lives and property.

In his remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Emergency Response and Safety Enforcement, Hon. (Prince) Wellington Oriade Adebawo, commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his leadership and support for the intervention, describing the distribution as a demonstration of the government’s concern for disaster victims and its commitment to prompt and effective emergency response.

Hon. Adebawo also commended the Deputy Governor, who chairs ODSEMA, for his continued commitment to the safety and wellbeing of the people of Ondo State. He assured that the agency and relevant stakeholders would continue to strengthen emergency response, protect lives and property and support communities affected by disasters.

The Executive Secretary of ODSEMA, Mr. Richard Aina, commended the state government for prioritising disaster management and providing assistance to residents affected by natural and human-induced disasters. He noted that the intervention would provide immediate relief to beneficiaries while further strengthening the agency’s commitment to coordinated, responsive and people-centred disaster management.

Mr. Aina called for sustained collaboration among government agencies, local government authorities, traditional institutions and communities to improve disaster preparedness, ensure prompt reporting of emergencies and facilitate the timely delivery of assistance to affected residents.

The event was attended by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor (Office of the Deputy Governor),Dr. Adekola Falodun, representatives of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), traditional rulers, Vice-Chairmen of the affected Local Government Areas, officials of ODSEMA and other stakeholders.
