NLC, FG Agree on Payment of Allowance Arrears

The Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have agreed on the payment of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears to workers, with disbursement scheduled to begin in November.

Under the agreement reached on Tuesday, the arrears, effective from May 1, 2026, will be paid in three equal monthly instalments.

The agreement followed a meeting between the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and the NLC leadership led by its president, Joe Ajaero, amid concerns over rising fuel prices and workers’ welfare.

As part of the deal, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also approved a monthly transport support of N70,000 for public service workers across all levels for six months, beginning in November 2026.

The agreement came as the four-day deadline issued by the NLC for the government to address concerns over fuel prices and the minimum wage expired on Tuesday, October 27.

In addition, both parties agreed to establish a negotiation committee that would begin meetings immediately to determine an effective date for implementing a new national minimum wage.

The NLC had demanded a reduction in fuel prices and a review of the N70,000 monthly minimum wage, citing the pressure of rising living costs on Nigerian workers.

The agreement provides for the payment of outstanding allowances and temporary transport support, while negotiations on minimum wage implementation and other labour concerns continue.
