Delta Reduces Legacy Debt From ₦463bn To ₦63bn, Targets Full Repayment By 2027
The Delta State Government says it has reduced its legacy debt from ₦463 billion to ₦63 billion, representing a reduction of ₦400 billion, with plans to clear the outstanding balance by the first quarter of 2027.

The Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr Sonny Ekedayen, disclosed this at the 2026 Budget Stakeholders Engagement in Asaba, where he outlined the administration’s fiscal position and priorities for the proposed 2027 budget.
Ekedayen said the government had made significant progress in reducing its inherited debt burden, bringing the outstanding balance down to ₦63 billion from the initial ₦463 billion.
He expressed the government’s intention to clear the remaining debt by the first quarter of 2027.
On expenditure, the commissioner explained that the state currently allocates approximately 70 per cent of its spending to capital projects, while recurrent expenditure accounts for 30 per cent.
He said the proposed 2027 budget would sustain the allocation structure, with roads and critical infrastructure receiving priority attention to stimulate economic growth and improve access to communities across the state.
Stakeholders at the engagement also called on residents to protect public facilities and maintain environmental cleanliness, emphasising that responsible citizenship was important to preserving government investments.
They further commended the introduction of the 13th-month salary for public servants, describing it as a significant milestone.
