My successor may not be religious or God-fearing like me & that should worry citizens – Gov. Uzodimma
According to a report by Daily Post Nigeria on August 27, 2025, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has stirred public debate after declaring that whoever succeeds him may not share his religious or God-fearing values.
The governor made the remark while addressing labour leaders and stakeholders at the Government House in Owerri, during a meeting focused on workers’ welfare and economic reforms.
Uzodimma, who came into office in January 2020, said that leadership in the state demands both vision and strong moral grounding, noting that his approach to governance is shaped by his faith.
He added that the future of Imo would depend on the character of whoever assumes office after him, stressing that political leadership should not only be about policies but also about personal conviction and values.
“My successor may not be religious or God-fearing like me, and that should worry citizens,” Uzodimma said, cautioning that leaders without spiritual or moral restraint could easily misuse power.
The governor’s statement comes at a time when his administration is implementing sweeping reforms, including a new minimum wage structure, expanded health insurance schemes, and massive infrastructure rebuilding.
He argued that good governance requires integrity and accountability, both of which, he insisted, stem from a leader’s personal values.
Observers say the comment may have been a subtle warning to political opponents and aspiring successors ahead of the 2027 elections.
Critics, however, argue that governance should be measured by transparency, economic performance, and delivery of public services rather than personal religious beliefs.
Civil society groups and opposition voices were quick to react, accusing the governor of attempting to present himself as morally superior while diverting attention from pressing issues such as unemployment, insecurity, and rising cost of living.
Others warned that mixing religion with politics could deepen divisions in an already fragile socio-political environment.
