Mother, 14-Year-Old Daughter Die As Three-Storey Building Collapses In Anambra

The incident occurred on Thursday morning, October 8, at No. 11 Emeka Ugwuanyi Street, near Anabanaba, Okpoko, amid heavy rainfall.

Awoman and her 14-year-old daughter have died after a three-storey building under construction collapsed on a nearby boys’ quarters in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning, October 8, at No. 11 Emeka Ugwuanyi Street, near Anabanaba, Okpoko, amid heavy rainfall.

The victims were identified as Mrs Happiness Ugoagu and her daughter, Miss Confidence, both indigenes of Uga in Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

They were reportedly asleep inside the boys’ quarters when the collapsing structure fell on the building, trapping them beneath the debris.

Anambra Building Collapse

Following the incident, residents, sympathisers and emergency responders mobilised to the scene to rescue those trapped and clear the rubble.

 

The Coordinator of the Local Emergency Management Agency and an indigene of Ogbaru, Nnamdi Esmai, said efforts were being intensified to rescue those trapped under the debris.

The Administration Officer in charge of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, Ndidi Omega, confirmed that an excavator had been deployed to the scene to support the rescue operation.

Similarly, the Head of Operations at the National Emergency Management Agency’s Enugu Operations Office, Priscilla Madukwe, confirmed that a team had been dispatched to support the emergency response.

The rescue operation, supervised by the Mayor of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Nnamdi Ifejika, continued for several hours before the remains of the mother and daughter were recovered from beneath the rubble.

Their remains were subsequently evacuated to a morgue, while emergency responders and residents continued clearing the debris and working to ensure the area was safe.

Reacting to the tragedy, the member representing Ogbaru State Constituency I in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Noble Igwe, sympathised with the bereaved family, describing the incident as unfortunate and devastating.

The cause of the building collapse had not been established as of the time of filing this report.
