Ministry Suspends High School Headmaster Over Alleged Sexual Misconduct With Female Student

The Ghanaian Ministry of Education has ordered the immediate suspension of the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Mr Zakaria Abdulai, over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.

The ministry also directed the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters to commence investigations into the allegations.

The directives followed an investigation by JoyNews and investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni into the alleged misconduct at the school in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

In a statement dated October 13, 2026, and signed by Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Ministry of Education, the ministry said the minister had directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to take immediate steps to suspend Abdulai pending the outcome of a full investigation.

“The Honourable Minister considers the issue serious and has directed the Director General of the Ghana Education Service to take effective immediate steps to suspend the Headmaster, Mr. Zakaria Abdulai, pending full investigations into the matter,” the statement said.

The ministry added that the minister had also requested the Police CID Headquarters to investigate the allegations.

It stressed that sexual misconduct and abuse would not be tolerated in educational institutions across the country.

“The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service reiterate that we would not tolerate or countenance such alleged despicable misconduct in any educational institution across the country,” the statement added.

The ministry further emphasised the responsibility of teachers and school administrators to protect students entrusted to their care by parents and guardians.

“Parents and Guardians have entrusted their wards in the care of teachers whose responsibilities are to protect and safeguard the children and not abuse them,” it said.

The ministry did not provide further details about the allegations or disclose when the investigation would be completed.

The suspension is intended to remain in place pending investigations, and the allegations have yet to be established by the authorities.
