Kamala Harris Slams Trump For Dragging US Into ‘Unwanted’ War With Iran, Pities American Troops
She described the development as a “dangerous and unnecessary gamble with American lives,” arguing that the consequences could extend beyond the United States and further destabilise the region.
Former United States Vice President, Kamala Harris, has accused President Donald Trump of dragging the country into a war that she said the American people do not want, warning that the conflict with Iran could endanger American troops, regional stability and the country’s standing in the world.
Harris made this known in a statement on Monday while declaring her opposition to a “regime-change war” in Iran.
“Donald Trump is dragging the United States into a war the American people do not want,” Harris said.
“Let me be clear: I am opposed to a regime-change war in Iran, and our troops are being put in harm’s way for the sake of Trump’s war of choice.”
She described the development as a “dangerous and unnecessary gamble with American lives,” arguing that the consequences could extend beyond the United States and further destabilise the region.
“This is a dangerous and unnecessary gamble with American lives that also jeopardizes stability in the region and our standing in the world,” she said.
“What we are witnessing is not strength. It is recklessness dressed up as resolve.”
Harris acknowledged the threat she said Iran poses, stressing that Tehran should not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon, but argued that military action pursued by the Trump administration was not the appropriate way to address the threat.
“I know the threat that Iran poses, and they must never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon, but this is not the way to dismantle that threat,” she said.
Harris also accused Trump of breaking promises he made during his political campaign regarding US involvement in foreign wars.
“During the campaign, Donald Trump promised to end wars rather than start them. It was a lie,” she said.
She further challenged Trump’s previous assertion that the US had already destroyed Iran’s nuclear programme.
“Then last year, he said ‘we obliterated’ Iran’s nuclear program. That, too, was a lie,” Harris said.
The former vice president also warned Americans to prepare for the possibility of US military casualties, citing Trump’s own acknowledgment that the conflict could result in the deaths or injuries of American service members.
“And let us all be clear-eyed about what comes next. The President has already said this conflict may produce American casualties,” she said.
Harris expressed support for American troops involved in the military operations, saying they were undertaking dangerous missions and praising their professionalism.
“Doug and I will be praying for all of our brave servicemen and women, who we know are undertaking dangerous missions with exceptional skill, discipline, and precision,” she said, referring to her husband, Doug Emhoff.
She, however, argued that American service members deserved a commander-in-chief who would exercise the same discipline and steadiness expected of them on the battlefield when making decisions about war and peace.
“Our troops deserve a Commander-in-Chief who approaches decisions on matters of war and peace with the same steadiness and discipline our troops show every day,” Harris said.
Harris also raised constitutional concerns over the president’s authority to commit the United States to war, arguing that Congress has a role in authorising military conflict.
“Under the Constitution of the United States, the President must receive authorization from Congress to enter a war,” she said.
She maintained that even congressional authorisation, if obtained, would not alter her assessment that the military action was unjustified.
“But even if he had, that does not change the fact this action is unwise, unjustified, and not supported by the American people,” Harris said.
She called on members of Congress to use their constitutional powers to prevent Trump from further escalating the conflict.
“There can be no equivocation in our opposition to Donald Trump’s war of choice, and Congress must use all available power to prevent him from further committing us to this conflict,” she said.
Harris said American troops, US allies and citizens deserved what she described as a more disciplined approach to decisions involving war and peace.
“Our troops, our allies, and the American people deserve nothing less,” she said.
