The May 22nd meeting was later followed by the Turaki faction adopting and ratifying Goodluck Jonathan as its 2027 presidential candidate.

However, a highly confidential source within the Turaki faction of the PDP has informed Reliant.ng that former president Jonathan and some stakeholders of Turaki PDP faction, met again behind closed doors on June 3rd. At the meeting, Goodluck Jonathan declared that he is uninterested in participating in the 2027 presidential election as a candidate.

According to the source, the former president spoke in his usual calm but emphatic manner, highlighting that a call for service to one’s nation should not be taking for granted. He however stated that the circumstances which surrounds the party and the country’s current political atmosphere compelled him to decline the call for him to join the presidential race.Politics

According to the source within the party, the Turaki faction pleaded with Goodluck Jonathan not to make his decision public and to serve as a placeholder for the party’s actual presidential candidate pending when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will upload political parties’ candidates for election.

The Turaki PDP faction believe that having Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate, gives the faction some legitimacy and leverage over the Nyesom Wike’s faction of the party.

However, the former president is said to being pressured from within Nigeria and outside Nigeria to make a public statement over his reported 2027 presidential bid.
