‘I didn’t collect N50b from government’: Sunday Igboho responds after Portable accuses him of collecting bribe to stop activism

Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has denied claims that he received ₦50 billion from the Nigerian government to halt his agitation for Yoruba sovereignty.

The allegation was made by controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, who, in a recent video, claimed that both Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, were offered massive financial incentives by the government to stop their activism. According to Portable, Nnamdi Kanu supposedly rejected the offer, insisting his only goal was the liberation of his people. At the same time, Igboho allegedly accepted the money, resulting in his silence on the agitation.

In a video call that surfaced online, Sunday Igboho dismissed the claims as false, stressing that he has never received payment from the government to abandon the movement.

“I didn’t collect any ₦50 billion from the government. The only reason bandits are feeling powerful is because they have government backing. I’ve been wanted since 2021, and even the president, who is Yoruba, didn’t deem it fit to clear my case.”

He added that being less vocal in recent months does not translate to abandoning the cause, but rather a strategic decision influenced by his ongoing legal and political challenges.

Portable’s allegations have stirred mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians questioning the authenticity of activist movements, while others criticized the singer for making claims without evidence.

Sunday Igboho became a central figure in the Yoruba Nation movement after leading rallies across Southwest Nigeria in 2021. His home in Ibadan was raided by security operatives the same year.
