Five Passengers Seriously Injured As 40-Foot Truck Rams Into Two Commercial Buses In Lagos

The collision involved an interstate commercial Mazda bus and a Toyota Hiace bus, both conveying passengers, and caused severe traffic congestion along the affected corridor.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued five seriously injured passengers after a 40-foot HOWO truck rammed into two commercial buses at Berger Bus Stop, inward Kara Bridge, along the Ojodu axis of Lagos State.

The collision involved an interstate commercial Mazda bus and a Toyota Hiace bus, both conveying passengers, and caused severe traffic congestion along the affected corridor.

According to a statement by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, the accident occurred on Tuesday, with the truck reportedly travelling out of Lagos when it crashed into the two passenger vehicles.

The authority said its operatives stationed around the Ojodu–Berger axis swiftly responded to the incident and rescued five critically injured passengers.

“LASTMA operatives stationed around the Ojodu–Berger axis responded with commendable alacrity, successfully rescuing five seriously injured passengers, comprising three females and two males, including the driver,” the statement said.

The injured victims were evacuated from the scene and transported to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate for urgent medical attention.

LASTMA said security personnel from Isheri Police Station provided security support during the rescue operation, while some motorists assisted in conveying the injured passengers to the medical facility alongside the agency’s officials.

Following the collision, LASTMA operatives evacuated the vehicles involved, including the articulated truck, from the road to prevent further accidents and facilitate the restoration of traffic flow.

The accident initially caused a significant traffic backlog, with queues extending backwards to Otedola Bridge.

However, the agency said its personnel remained deployed along the affected stretch, directing traffic and implementing measures to ease congestion.

The vehicles were subsequently handed over to the police for investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and any necessary legal action.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy with the injured passengers and wished them a speedy recovery.

He stressed the importance of responsible driving, compliance with road safety regulations and regular maintenance of heavy-duty vehicles, warning that mechanical defects, reckless driving and loss of control could lead to serious road accidents.

LASTMA urged operators of articulated trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles to ensure their vehicles were roadworthy and exercise caution when navigating major highways.

The authority also called on motorists to remain vigilant and comply with traffic directives issued by its officials to prevent avoidable accidents and ensure safer roads across Lagos State.
