According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Wednesday, August 27, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains a member of the party amid speculations about possible candidates for the 2027 presidential election.

This clarification was made by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, during an appearance on a television programme on Wednesday.

His statement comes at a time when conversations about zoning and potential aspirants are dominating Nigeria’s political space ahead of the next general election.

Ologunagba explained that despite widespread rumours suggesting that Jonathan may have parted ways with the PDP, the former president has not officially resigned from the party.

He emphasised that Jonathan’s membership remains intact, adding that he has not declared his interest in contesting any political position under another platform.

This announcement appears to be a move to clear the air, especially as the party’s recent decision to zone its presidential ticket to the South has reignited debates about who may emerge as the PDP’s candidate.

The PDP spokesman, however, chose not to speak in detail about the political future of Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections.

According to him, Obi has not indicated any decision to return to the PDP after leaving the party in the buildup to the last election.

This cautious response reflects the uncertainty surrounding Obi’s next political move, especially considering his growing popularity among young voters and urban dwellers.

The clarification on Jonathan’s position within the party is significant because of his political stature both in Nigeria and across Africa.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015, remains one of the most respected figures within the PDP.

While he has not publicly declared any intention to contest in 2027, his name often comes up in political discussions due to his influence, experience, and connections across different regions of the country.
