Bandits Kill Islamic Cleric, Abduct 10 in Sokoto Community

A fresh attack by suspected bandits in Sokoto State has reportedly left an Islamic cleric dead and at least 10 people abducted.

The incident occurred last night in Gidan Kare village, Tureta Local Government Area, according to local sources.

The attackers reportedly ambushed residents and other people returning from Tureta before opening fire and abducting several victims. The attack triggered panic in the community, forcing some residents to flee their homes for safety.

Among those reportedly killed was an Islamic cleric, whose identity has not yet been independently confirmed.

The latest attack adds to the growing security concerns facing rural communities across parts of Sokoto State, where residents continue to face the threat of bandit attacks, abductions and displacement.

The reported incident also raises a broader question about how insecurity is described and discussed across Nigeria. Attacks resulting in the deaths of Christians or occurring in Plateau and other parts of the Middle Belt sometimes attract descriptions such as “Christian genocide,” while attacks against predominantly Muslim communities in the Northwest may receive less national and international attention.

Regardless of the location or religion of the victims, the loss of innocent lives and the abduction of civilians deserve equal condemnation.

Every Nigerian life should matter equally, and communities affected by terrorism, banditry and kidnapping deserve protection, justice and sustained attention from government and security agencies.

Note: The reported death toll and number of abducted persons are based on local accounts and should be updated if official security agencies provide further confirmation.
