“I Looked Very Hopeless”: Tinubu Makes Surprising Admission About His 2023 Presidential Campaign

According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday November 07, 2026, President Bola Tinubu has admitted that his chances of winning the 2023 presidential election appeared uncertain at the time, recalling that he looked “very hopeless” before Nigerians, particularly residents of Rivers State, came out to support his ambition.
Tinubu made the remarks on Saturday during his presidential campaign visit to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, where he expressed appreciation to residents for their contribution to his victory in the last general election.

The President said the support he received from Nigerians during the 2023 election secured the mandate he currently exercises as the country’s leader. He specifically acknowledged the role played by Rivers voters in helping him achieve his political ambition.
“Thank you for last election. In 2022, 2023, I looked very hopeless, but you trooped out to support me, gave me the mandate. The mandate that I use to govern today. You are a positive contributor,” Tinubu said.
His comments highlighted the importance he attached to the backing he received from Rivers State during the campaign that eventually brought him to power.
The visit comes as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, with Tinubu preparing to seek another term in office.
The President is expected to face opposition from several political figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), both identified as major challengers to his re-election ambition.
The forthcoming contest is expected to draw attention as political parties and their candidates work to strengthen their support bases across the country.
Tinubu’s decision to revisit the difficulties he faced before the 2023 election and thank Rivers residents for their backing comes as he seeks to secure another mandate.
