Atiku’s Aide Blasts Onanuga as ‘Servant of a Clueless President’ Over Call to Sanction Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer

Paul Ibe, the media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has taken a swipe at presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, calling him “a servant of a clueless president” after Onanuga demanded sanctions against lawyer Aloy Ejimakor for joining the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja.

Mr. Onanuga had earlier criticized Ejimakor, who represents detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, accusing him of teaming up with activist Omoyele Sowore during the protest instead of focusing on legal proceedings. He also questioned the lawyer’s professional ethics.

In a fiery response shared on X, Paul Ibe said Onanuga’s remarks were politically motivated and baseless, adding that there is no law preventing lawyers from peacefully protesting for their clients’ freedom.

“Everything isn’t about politics. But that should not surprise anyone since you serve an incompetent and clueless president who has abandoned governance for politics,” Ibe wrote.

Quoting Section 40 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, Ibe stressed that the nation’s legal code does not bar legal practitioners from participating in peaceful demonstrations.

He further accused Onanuga of blind loyalty, saying he continues to defend the failures of the Tinubu-led administration, which he blamed for worsening economic hardship across the country.

“By the way, how does your politically motivated call for Ejimakor’s sanction help reduce the prices of food items or improve the lives of Nigerians?” Ibe asked.

The exchange comes amid widespread outrage over reports that security operatives used force to disperse peaceful protesters calling for Nnamdi Kanu’s release in Abuja. The crackdown has sparked condemnation from both local and international rights groups.
