Army Neutralises Four Militia Members, Recovers Weapons in Taraba Operation

Troops of the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have taken down four armed militia members and recovered weapons during a security operation triggered by renewed communal clashes in Usmanu Village, Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday. He explained that the deployment followed credible intelligence pointing to a fresh flare-up in the long-standing land dispute between the Shomo and Wurkun communities, which recently escalated into violent confrontations and the burning of homes.

The Army said troops came under fire shortly after arriving at the troubled community. A brief exchange ensued, resulting in the death of four attackers.

A search of the area led to the recovery of three dane guns, a fabricated AK-47 rifle, twenty-five rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition and two motorcycles.

The Army also announced the arrest of a police officer allegedly found operating alongside the militia group. He is currently being investigated to determine his role.

Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of the 6 Brigade and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, commended the soldiers for their quick response and professionalism. He reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to restoring peace and flushing out criminal elements across Taraba.

He urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and report suspicious movements as operations under Operation Peace Shield, Operation Lafiya Nakowa and Operation Zafin Wuta continue across the state.
