Reactions as Senate issues controversial warning to governors over banditry and terrorism

Reactions have trailed Nigeria’s Senate directive to state-governors over worsening insecurity in the country occasioned by bánditry and terrórism.

During its plenary session today, the Nigerian senate while deliberating over the incessant terrór attacks and kidnáppings across the country, mandated state-governors to desist from negotiating with bandits and terrórists. The senate warns that negotiating with bándits is counterproductive to the fight against insecurity as its amounts to encouraging crime.

The senate emphasized that ransom payment to bandits by states do not result in lasting peace but serves rather as a means of empowering the crimînals against the state.

The senate also mandated the Nigeria Police Force and the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre to go after crimînals who use social media platforms such as TikTok to display money they realized from their crîminal activities.

The resolution by the senate followed a motion by Senator Sunday Karimi who decried recent attacks on communities in Kogi West Senatorial districts.

The senator recounted how suspected bándits attacked a secondary school in Iluke-Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State in an attempt to kidnàp students of the school who were writing their Senior School Certificate Examination.

Senator Sunday Karimi explained that the attack resulted in the deáth of the school vice president, a teacher and a resident of the community.
