15-Year-Old Boy Shot Dead As Police Officers Disrupt Maulid Gathering In Borno After DPO Complained About Noise
The incident reportedly occurred on October 18, 2026, when police officers arrived at the venue and disrupted the gathering, leaving several people injured and damaging sound equipment and other belongings.

Community sources have accused police officers of shooting dead a 15-year-old boy during a Maulid celebration in Banki, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, after the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area reportedly complained about noise from the religious gathering.
The incident reportedly occurred on October 18, 2026, when police officers arrived at the venue and disrupted the gathering, leaving several people injured and damaging sound equipment and other belongings.
The community sources, who spoke to SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity for fear of intimidation by the police, said the DPO had visited the gathering earlier that evening with his driver and a police orderly identified as Abdullahi.
According to one of the sources, who knows the organiser of the event, identified as the “chairman,” the DPO arrived while the celebration was taking place in front of the organiser’s residence.
The source said the organiser and his brother, Malam Idris, greeted the DPO, who complained that the sound from the gathering was too loud.
“He said the sound was too much and that even when he was in his office at the police station, he felt as if the recitation was taking place inside his room,” the source said.
He explained that the DPO did not order them to remove their speakers or stop the celebration but only asked them to reduce the volume.
The source said the organiser responded by switching off and bringing down two high-frequency speakers, while the remaining speakers on the ground were left playing at a low volume that could not be heard beyond the street.
He said the DPO remained at the venue for about 40 to 50 minutes before leaving peacefully.
However, the source alleged that police officers later returned to the area in two vehicles with their headlights switched off.
According to him, the officers cut off the power supply to the sound system, switched off the generator and began attacking people at the gathering.
“They came and cut off the electricity to the sound system and switched off the generator. They started beating people with batons, firing tear gas and later shooting guns,” he said.
The source alleged that the officers’ actions caused panic as people scrambled to escape the scene.
He said several people sustained injuries during the incident, with some suffering broken bones, while belongings at the venue were damaged.
The source further alleged that a 15-year-old boy attending the religious gathering was shot in the neck and died.
“During the shooting, they shot the young man who later died. He was one of the students attending the religious gathering. They shot him right there at the venue, and he fell to the ground,” he said.
The community source also alleged that the officers took away mobile phones, speakers, sound equipment and other belongings during the operation.
He maintained that he witnessed the incident first-hand, stressing that his account was based on what happened at the venue.
“I am an eyewitness to everything I am describing. This is not hearsay or a story someone told me,” he said.
The sources called on the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Nazir Abdulmajid, to ensure a transparent investigation into the incident, including the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death and the alleged conduct of the officers involved.
They also called for appropriate disciplinary action against any officers found culpable and compensation for the family of the deceased boy.
Efforts by SaharaReporters to reach the Borno State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Kenneth Daso, for comments on the incident were unsuccessful, as he neither answered calls to his mobile phone nor responded to a text message sent to him.
