‘You Will Pay Taxes Beyond Your Capacity in 2027’ – Ireti Kingibe Warns Nigerians
Senator Ireti Kingibe has raised concerns over Nigeria’s tax policy, warning that Nigerians could face a heavier tax burden in 2027.

Kingibe made the remarks in a recent video while addressing voters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where she claimed that many Nigerians were unaware of a tax law she said had already been passed by the National Assembly.
According to the senator, the policy would require Nigerians to pay 25 per cent of their earnings as tax, with implementation allegedly expected after the 2027 general election.
“They passed the policy, but fear won’t let them implement it until after the elections,” she said.
Kingibe’s comments have drawn attention to questions about the timing of tax policy implementation and its potential impact on individuals and households already facing economic pressures.
However, her claim that everyone would be required to pay 25 per cent of their earnings needs to be checked against the specific provisions of the relevant tax legislation. The actual tax payable by an individual depends on the applicable rules and the type and amount of income involved.
What is your view? Do you think Nigeria’s tax policies could place an additional burden on citizens, or could they help improve government revenue?
