The cleric shared his position in a video that has gone viral on social media, where he addressed marriage, divorce and the challenges couples encounter in their relationships.

Speaking on the issue, Orokpo urged married people going through difficult times to seek guidance from church authorities instead of allowing opinions and advice from social media users to influence their decisions.

He maintained that disagreements and physical confrontations between couples should not automatically lead to divorce, stressing that marriage requires intervention and efforts towards reconciliation.

“Forget this garbage on Facebook. I tell you, he slaps you or she slaps you, walk away. Walk away to where? There’s no divorce because there is crisis in marriage,” he said.

The preacher also advised unmarried Christians to be intentional and careful when choosing their life partners, warning against making marital decisions based solely on emotions.

Addressing couples already experiencing difficulties, Orokpo recommended seeking help from spiritual authorities who could assess their situations and determine whether their marriages could be restored.

He explained that where reconciliation was not immediately possible, the couple could be asked to live separately for a period while undergoing counselling and spiritual guidance.

According to him, such an arrangement would give both partners an opportunity to work on their character, understand their differences and make necessary changes before considering living together again.

However, Orokpo argued that when efforts to restore the marriage failed, the couple could be advised to part ways without being permitted to remarry.

“In a situation where it cannot happen, then that authority can tell you go separate ways, but you can divorce and you cannot remarry. It will become a cross you will bear for a lifetime,” he said.

The cleric further warned Christians against following social media advice encouraging people to end their marriages and find new partners whenever they experience disagreements at home.

Citing biblical teachings attributed to Jesus Christ, he argued that divorce outside the grounds he recognises in Scripture, followed by remarriage, amounts to adultery.

He also maintained that the person who marries someone who has divorced under such circumstances could equally be guilty of adultery.

“Jesus said if it is not for the cause of fornication, he said you are guilty of adultery. The person that marries you is also guilty of adultery,” Orokpo stated.

The preacher went further to warn that Christians who entered marriage as believers could face serious spiritual consequences if they later divorced and remarried against what he considers biblical instructions.

He concluded by encouraging unmarried Christians to approach marriage according to biblical principles, while urging those already married to prioritise prayer, godly character and the study of God’s Word.

“For those of you who are not yet married, better do it the Bible way. And for those of you who are already married, invest enough character, enough prayer and enough Scripture, Word of God for that marriage to work,” he said.

Orokpo reiterated that couples should seek appropriate spiritual counsel and make genuine efforts to resolve marital problems rather than rushing into divorce.
