Wike: Fubara Signed Agreement Not to Seek Second Term

Wike claimed that the arrangement was designed to halt ongoing impeachment efforts against Fubara, on the condition that the governor would not seek a second term in office. He made the remarks in Abuja during an inspection tour of projects scheduled for inauguration as part of activities marking the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking with journalists during the inspection, Wike said the governor’s withdrawal did not come as a surprise, insisting that it was the result of political negotiations involving factions that had been in conflict with the Rivers State governor.

The former governor of Rivers State also criticised Fubara, whom he described as his political protégé, accusing him of lacking political loyalty and abandoning those who supported his rise to power. Wike further questioned the governor’s political consistency, alleging that despite the agreement not to contest in 2027, Fubara still obtained a nomination form.

According to the minister, the political crisis currently unfolding in Rivers State reflects decisions that had already been concluded privately among key political actors involved in the dispute.

Aside from addressing political issues, Wike also inspected several ongoing infrastructure projects under the Federal Capital Territory Administration. One of the projects visited was the Renewed Hope City housing development in Karsana, being executed by Lubriks. He revealed that the project had reached 98 percent completion and would soon be commissioned as part of the anniversary celebrations.

The minister also inspected the Old Keffi Road project in Dei Dei, where asphalt laying and installation of streetlights are ongoing. Expressing satisfaction with the level of work completed, Wike praised the contractors and said the project would also be inaugurated during the celebrations.
