1. Performance and Economic Model
Since May 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has pursued decisive economic reforms: removal of fuel subsidy, unification of the exchange rate, tax reform, and a push for fiscal discipline. The objective is to correct long-standing distortions, widen the tax base, attract investment, and improve revenue for infrastructure and social spending.
These actions align with a state-led, reform-driven growth model. It is the same model of targeted liberalization, infrastructure investment, and productivity focus that China deployed from 1978 onward to lift over 800 million people out of poverty. The core logic is identical: remove subsidies that distort markets, stabilize macroeconomics, open the economy to investment, and use increased revenue to build roads, power, ports, and industry at scale. Nigeria is now adopting that playbook.

Nigeria requires continuity to see structural reforms through. The current policies are difficult in the short term but are designed for long-term productivity, job creation, and global competitiveness. Opposition to President Tinubu is largely driven by ethnicity bias and not based on performance. Nigeria is a federation of diverse, distinct ethnic nationalities. A unitary, over-centralized structure has not worked for 66 years. What Nigeria needs is true federalism and resource control. States and regions must control their resources, pay taxes to the center, and develop at their own pace. This is the only viable administration of diversity for a country made up of non-compatible ethnic groups. It will reduce friction at the center, increase accountability, and allow each region to compete and grow.
