Why I rejected juicy political offers – Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde
Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has revealed that she repeatedly rejected lucrative political and commercial offers that could have made her a billionaire because she was unwilling to compromise her values.
The award-winning actress made the disclosure while speaking on an episode of the Afropolitan podcast, where she reflected on the choices she has made throughout her decades-long career in the entertainment industry.
Jalade-Ekeinde said she had found herself in situations where accepting certain offers and compromising her principles could have brought her substantial financial rewards.
However, she said she chose to walk away, even when the opportunities appeared tempting and there was little risk of the public discovering what had happened.
Why I turned down lucrative offers
The actress explained that some of the proposals presented to her were not necessarily bad or illegal on the surface, but accepting them would have conflicted with her foundational beliefs.
She said she sometimes felt tempted to compromise because the offers did not immediately appear harmful. However, she ultimately decided against accepting them because of their potential long-term impact on her principles and public message.
“If I wanted to be a billionaire, I would have been it easily,” Jalade-Ekeinde said, explaining that she had been in situations where she could have accepted certain benefits without anyone knowing.
She said she instead chose to reject the offers and walk away from the financial opportunities.
‘I would have compromised my stance’
According to the actress, the opportunities came at different points in her career and involved situations where she could have been paid handsomely if she agreed to compromise her position.
She stressed that the decision was not always based on whether an offer was explicitly wrong, but whether accepting it would undermine the values upon which she had built her career.
Jalade-Ekeinde said some of the people who made such offers continue to watch her career, but she has remained firm in her decision not to compromise her principles for financial gain.
Political offers among opportunities rejected
The veteran actress also disclosed that some of the opportunities she rejected were connected to politics.
She said she had encountered several situations in which she could have benefited financially by taking positions or accepting offers that conflicted with her stance.
Jalade-Ekeinde maintained that she would rather walk away from a lucrative opportunity than allow financial considerations to weaken the principles and values associated with her public image.
Protecting her message and values
The actress said compromising her beliefs could have affected the credibility of the message she has consistently promoted throughout her career.
She explained that even when an opportunity appeared harmless, she considered how accepting it could affect her foundation and belief system in the long run.
According to her, repeatedly making such compromises could eventually dilute the message she represents.
She therefore chose to prioritise consistency, integrity and her personal convictions over financial rewards.
