Why I Refused To Play For Super Eagles – 22-Year-Old Brentford Defender Reveals
Brentford defender Michael Kayode has revealed why he turned down the opportunity to represent the Super Eagles at senior international level.
According to a report by Soccernet, the 22-year-old right-back, who was born in Italy to Nigerian parents, has instead committed his international future to Italy after receiving his first senior call-up to the Azzurri.
Kayode confirmed that Nigeria had approached him about representing the three-time African champions, but said he never considered switching allegiance.
According to the defender, his decision was influenced by his long association with Italy, having represented the country at various youth levels.
“It was a very easy decision. I went through all the youth teams here. Nigeria approached me, but I never thought about changing national teams,” Kayode said.
“I think Italy have always been a great national team, and playing here is an honour.”
Kayode’s relationship with Italy dates back several years, having represented the country through the youth ranks and played a key role in Italy’s triumph at the 2023 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
The defender scored the winning goal against Portugal in the final as Italy secured the European U-19 title.
His first senior call-up came after an impressive start to the 2026/27 Premier League season with Brentford.
Kayode revealed that he only learned about his selection for the Italy senior team after Brentford’s 3-0 victory over Chelsea.
“I didn’t know about the Italy call-up before the game [against Chelsea]; I found out at the final whistle, on my phone,” he said.
“It was an incredible emotion, especially after such a big win.”
Kayode joined Brentford from Fiorentina and has established himself in the Premier League.
He initially moved to the English club on loan in January 2025 before the transfer was made permanent.
His decision to represent Italy means Nigeria’s approach did not result in a change of international allegiance, with Kayode now preparing for his first opportunity at senior level with the Azzurri.
