When the Law Is Ignored, Disorder Follows –  Suspended owo chairman driven out by angry youths as Lawlessness return ends chaotic

An atmosphere of tension enveloped Owo Local Government Secretariat today as a suspended chairman made a controversial and forceful attempt to resume office in defiance of subsisting legal restraints. The development, which many observers have described as a calculated affront to judicial authority quickly spiralled into unrest as aggrieved youths surged into the premises and forcefully ejected him.

The embattled chairman’s action came despite a pending suit before a competent court of law and the service of an originating summons expressly restraining any such resumption. His decision to proceed regardless has been widely interpreted as a deliberate act of self-help, one that runs contrary to the most basic tenets of constitutional governance and respect for due process.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the situation deteriorated rapidly upon his arrival at the secretariat with youths mobilising in large numbers to resist what they perceived as an unlawful occupation of office. In the ensuing confrontation, the chairman was physically overpowered and driven out, bringing his attempted return to an abrupt and humiliating end.

While the reaction of the youths reflects deep-seated frustration within the community, it also highlights the volatile consequences of disregarding lawful procedures. The rule of law, which serves as the bedrock of any orderly society is severely undermined when individuals choose to act in defiance of judicial pronouncements.

Legal analysts have stressed that the appropriate course of action for the suspended chairman would have been to allow the courts to adjudicate on the matter rather than precipitating a breakdown of order through unilateral action. By electing to bypass this process, he not only exposed himself to public backlash but also risked compounding his legal vulnerabilities.

The incident serves as a stark reminder that governance must be anchored on legality, restraint and respect for institutional processes. Any deviation from these principles inevitably invites disorder, as was witnessed in Owo today.

As calm gradually returns to the area, stakeholders have called for strict adherence to the rule of law and urged all parties to refrain from further actions capable of escalating tensions. The judiciary remains the proper arbiter of the dispute and its authority must be neither undermined nor pre-empted.

In the final analysis, today’s events in Owo stand as a cautionary tale: when the law is ignored, the consequences are rarely orderly and often profoundly disruptive.
