Nigerian cleric Primate Elijah Ayodele has expressed concern over what he perceives as an excessive focus on road construction by political leaders, urging a more balanced approach that prioritizes human capital development. In a recent Facebook video, the cleric emphasized that while infrastructure is important, it should not overshadow investments that directly improve the lives and productivity of citizens.

During his address, Ayodele argued that the country’s economic challenges cannot be resolved through infrastructure projects alone. He maintained that maintaining existing roads should take precedence over embarking on new construction initiatives. According to him, “I’ve told you it’s not road that we need. Just level the road. Put it in order.” This statement underscores his belief that proper management and upkeep of current infrastructure are more beneficial than continuous expansion.

The cleric also highlighted the urgent need for job creation and skills development, warning that neglecting these areas could deepen unemployment and economic hardship. He called on government officials, particularly state governors, to channel resources into initiatives that empower citizens. Stressing this point, he stated, “Create job opportunity, build human capital,” advocating for policies that enhance education, vocational training, and employment opportunities.

Furthermore, Ayodele criticized some political leaders for allegedly using infrastructure projects as tools for personal promotion rather than genuine development. He remarked, “They are just doing road to advertise themselves,” suggesting that certain public works projects may be driven more by political image-building than by the actual needs of the people.

In addition to his economic concerns, Ayodele commented on the political climate, predicting potential tensions within the country’s leadership. He specifically noted the possibility of conflict in the legislative arm, stating, “Senator will fight Akpabio,” referring to Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He warned that such disagreements could contribute to instability at the national level.
