Viral 80s Trend Exposes Woman Accused Of Stealing Gold 45 Years Ago
A woman accused of stealing a gold necklace from a jewellery shop in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India, nearly 45 years ago has reportedly been traced after she shared an AI-generated photograph of herself on social media.

The woman’s post, made as part of a viral 1980s nostalgia trend, was reportedly recognised by the owner of the jewellery shop, who claimed she was the same woman linked to the decades-old theft.
According to reports by local newspaper, IND Today, the woman allegedly stole the gold necklace from the shop about 45 years ago but escaped without being traced despite an investigation by the police at the time.
She reportedly later changed her name and moved to another location, where she lived under a different identity for several decades.
The case remained unresolved until the jewellery shop owner came across the woman’s recent social media post.
The owner reportedly recognised her from the AI-generated photograph and contacted the police, providing information that helped authorities identify and locate her.
Police subsequently began investigating the case and questioned the woman over the alleged theft.
During questioning, she reportedly admitted to being involved in the incident.
The case has drawn attention to the unexpected role social media can play in helping identify people linked to old criminal investigations, particularly as AI-generated images and nostalgia trends become increasingly popular online.
In this case, a photograph shared as part of an 80s-themed social media trend reportedly brought a decades-old theft back to the attention of the victim and police.
The incident was first reported by M9 News and has subsequently been reported by other media outlets.
