US Embassy Lisbon Pays Tribute To Ronaldo Following Portugal Retirement

The United States Embassy in Lisbon has paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo following his retirement from international football, describing the Portugal captain as an extraordinary athlete and a remarkable ambassador for his country.

In a post on X, the embassy, through Ambassador John J. Arrigo, celebrated Ronaldo’s more than two decades of service to the Portuguese national team, highlighting his 146 goals and 234 appearances in the country’s colours.

“Some careers transcend sport. Cristiano Ronaldo’s is one of them,” the statement read.

“For more than two decades, he has worn Portugal’s colors with extraordinary determination, talent, and pride. His 146 goals and 234 appearances for the national team tell only part of the story.

“The memories he has given millions of fans, and the inspiration he has provided to generations of young athletes, are immeasurable.”

The embassy said Ronaldo’s contribution to Portuguese football went beyond his statistics, noting the memories and inspiration he had provided to millions of supporters and young athletes around the world.

“As he closes this chapter with the national team, we celebrate not only an extraordinary athlete, but a remarkable ambassador for his country,” it added.

The statement concluded with a message of appreciation to the 40-year-old forward for his commitment and contribution to the game.

“Thank you, Cristiano, for the passion, the perseverance and the memories. Portugal, and football fans everywhere, will always be proud.”

Ronaldo made his senior international debut for Portugal in 2003 and went on to become the country’s most-capped player and all-time leading goalscorer. He captained the team to its first European Championship title in 2016 and also helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

His international career established several records, including becoming the first men’s footballer to reach 200 international appearances and the leading goalscorer in men’s international football.
