UNIZIK Student Dies After Taking ‘Mmkupirmiri’, Jumping From Lodge Balcony
The student community of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Akwa, Anambra State, were thrown into mourning in late Thursday as a male undergraduate of the school reportedly jumped to his death from a three-storey building at a private student lodge near Royal Kitchen Junction, Ifite-Awka.
According to eyewitnesses, the student, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, allegedly consumed an unknown substance suspected to be “mkpurummiri” before the fatal incident. He was seen leaping from the balcony of the lodge and landed with a loud thud, sparking panic in the area.
“We suddenly heard a loud thud yesterday (Thursday) evening, prompting a rush to the scene where the young man was found lying in a pool of his own blood, critically injured,” one eyewitness recounted.
Despite frantic efforts to save him, the student was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital where he was rushed for emergency treatment.
Further reports revealed that his roommate, also found in their shared room, was in a disoriented state and is suspected to have ingested the same substance. He is currently in custody and will be interrogated once he regains full consciousness.
“The victim, whose name is being withheld pending notification of his family, was identified as a tenant in the lodge… Despite efforts to save him, the student was confirmed dead at a nearby hospital. Authorities are working diligently to contact the deceased’s family and investigate the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” the source added.
Confirming the incident, the Chief Safety Officer at UNIZIK, Ken Chukwurah, said the unfortunate event occurred off-campus and that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances and verify the victim’s identity.
Chukwurah stated, “We are still investigating to be sure of what happened, how it happened and the proper identity of the victim. It happened in a private lodge outside the school, and we don’t have control over who is admitted to such lodges.”
The incident has left the university community in mourning, with calls for greater oversight of private student accommodations and increased awareness about drug abuse among undergraduates.
