Trump Launches Fresh Attack On Pope Leo, Claims He’s Endangering Catholics, Backing Nuclear Arms

The remarks have sparked backlash across political and religious circles, particularly given the Catholic Church’s longstanding opposition to nuclear weapons.

Tensions between the White House and the Vatican have escalated sharply after President Donald Trump accused Pope Leo XIV of “endangering” Catholics and allegedly supporting Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons— claims the pontiff has firmly denied.

The renewed criticism from Trump comes just days before Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit the Vatican, adding a diplomatic layer to an already fraught relationship between Washington and the leadership of the Catholic Church.

According to Aljazeera, Trump intensified his rhetoric by accusing the Pope of actions that could undermine the safety of Catholics globally, while also claiming that the pontiff’s stance indirectly aligns with efforts to allow Iran access to nuclear capabilities.

 

The remarks have sparked backlash across political and religious circles, particularly given the Catholic Church’s longstanding opposition to nuclear weapons.

Responding to the allegations, Pope Leo rejected Trump’s claims and called for honesty in public discourse.

He stated that if “someone were to accuse him, they should do so with the truth,” while reiterating that the Catholic Church “has been against nuclear weapons for a long while.”

The controversy comes amid a broader public exchange between the two figures, which has unfolded over recent days.

Earlier, the Pope had vowed to continue speaking out against war and injustice, insisting that the Christian message must not be misrepresented or politicised.

Speaking in April, aboard the papal flight to Algiers — part of a 10-day tour across four African countries — the first U.S.-born pontiff signaled that he would not be drawn into a direct confrontation with Trump, even as he defended the moral integrity of his office.

“I don’t want to get into a ⁠debate with him,” Leo told Reuters as he greeted journalists on the plane.

“I don’t think that the message of the Gospel is meant to be abused in the way that some people are doing.”

Reaffirming his global stance, the Pope emphasised that his mission remains rooted in advocating for peace and cooperation among nations.

“I will continue to speak out loudly against war, looking to promote peace, promoting dialogue and multilateral relationships among the states to look for just solutions to problems,” he said.

He also highlighted the human cost of ongoing conflicts, warning of the devastating toll on civilians.

“Too many people are suffering in the world today,” said Pope Leo XIV.

“Too ⁠many innocent people are being killed. And I think someone has to stand up and say: ‘There’s a better way’.”

Clarifying his role, the pontiff stressed that his position is not political but spiritual, anchored in Christian teachings.

“The message of the church, my message, the message of the Gospel: Blessed are the Peacemakers. I do not look at my role ⁠as being political, a politician,” he said.

The dispute follows earlier remarks by Trump, who reportedly described the Pope as “weak” in a social media post, part of a broader online exchange that has intensified scrutiny of the relationship between political power and religious authority.

The situation was further inflamed after Trump shared — and later deleted — an AI-generated image on his Truth Social platform depicting himself in a Christ-like pose performing a healing gesture.

The image, which included symbolic American landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and the Lincoln Memorial, drew widespread criticism.

Even some of Trump’s supporters condemned the post. One supporter, Leroy Brookens, said, “I am a solid Trump supporter and fan, but Trump is not Christ and this art is blasphemous.”

Another follower, writing under the handle Kiwi Ellis, added, “God values humility and this is the opposite of that. The blasphemy is real.”

Despite the intensifying rhetoric, Pope Leo has maintained that his focus remains on promoting peace and addressing global suffering rather than engaging in political disputes.

His remarks during the papal flight underscored a consistent theme of his early papacy: a commitment to moral clarity in the face of war and a refusal to remain silent amid human suffering.
