Tragedy as helicopter crashes into field
A helicopter has crashed into a field on the Isle of Wight, prompting a major emergency response on Monday morning.
According to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, officers were called at about 9:24am to reports of a “light aircraft crash” near Shanklin Road, close to Ventnor.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance confirmed that a critical care team including a doctor and a specialist paramedic was dispatched to the scene.
Details about the number of people on board or the extent of injuries remain unclear at this stage.
However, a witness, Leigh Goldsmith, told the Isle of Wight County Press that she saw the helicopter “spiralling” before it went down into a hedge while she was driving along a nearby road. She added that there appeared to be four people on board and believed the aircraft’s airbags had deployed.
Police have urged residents and motorists to avoid the area, noting that the road has been closed due to the heavy presence of emergency service vehicles.
