Tragedy as Fresh graduate, two siblings die at post convocation party

No fewer than three persons were feared dead on Saturday night after a post-convocation celebration turned violent in Ikere-Ekiti, headquarters of Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

The incident occurred at a hotel in the town, where students and fresh graduates had gathered to celebrate the second convocation ceremony of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology.

Sources said the atmosphere, which was initially filled with excitement, became chaotic following a disagreement among some attendees that reportedly escalated into violence.

Eyewitnesses said panic broke out when some individuals allegedly introduced weapons into the fray, forcing partygoers to scramble for safety.

“In the confusion, there was a rush to escape, which led to a stampede within the premises,” a source said.

Another source disclosed that the casualties were recorded amid the ensuing disorder.

“Three persons lost their lives in the incident. Two died during the stampede, hile another was reportedly attacked during the violence. One of the victims was a fresh graduate who had attended the convocation earlier in the day,” the source added.

It was further gathered that two of the deceased were siblings, a development that has thrown their family and the community into mourning.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force in the state had yet to release an official statement on the incident.

Efforts to ascertain whether any arrests had been made were still ongoing.
