THE Federal Government has commenced construction of more than 10,000 housing units across 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope housing programme, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said.

Idris disclosed this on Friday in Abuja at the 20th Anniversary Gala and Award Night of Abuja Property Development Company (APDC) Limited, where he highlighted the administration’s investment in housing development and mortgage financing to address the country’s housing deficit.

According to the minister, the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme is expanding access to housing and supporting efforts to improve living standards through sustained investment, strategic partnerships and innovative financing.

“Through the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme, the administration has advanced housing projects across the country, with more than 10,000 housing units commenced across 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.

Idris added that effective collaboration between the government and private sector stakeholders would be critical to making homeownership more accessible to Nigerians.

Nigeria faces a significant housing deficit, with affordability, access to mortgage financing and the rising cost of building materials remaining major challenges for prospective homeowners.

The minister stressed that property development should go beyond the construction of buildings to creating sustainable communities that support families, businesses and economic growth.

“Property development goes beyond putting up buildings. It involves creating spaces where families can live, businesses can grow, and communities can thrive,” he said.

He noted that well-planned property developments contribute to urban growth, generate employment and stimulate economic activities, urging developers to maintain high standards, adopt responsible planning practices and deliver projects that meet the needs of families and communities.

Idris, a former chairman of APDC’s Board of Directors, also congratulated the company on its 20th anniversary, commending its management, staff and stakeholders for their contributions to its growth and development.

At the event, the company presented the minister with an award in recognition of his service as chairman of its board. The award plaque acknowledged his leadership during his two tenures, describing his stewardship as instrumental to the company’s development, organisational structure and reputation.

The minister expressed optimism that APDC would build on its two decades of experience and continue to contribute to Abuja’s development through quality housing delivery and responsible property development.

Among those present at the event were the Group Managing Director of Abuja Investment Company Limited, represented by Dr Abiodun Akambi; APDC’s Acting Managing Director, Akeem Aderogba; and the company’s former Managing Director, Lawal Magaji.

Other attendees included chief executives, management and staff members of APDC, as well as other dignitaries.

The Federal Government’s housing initiative forms part of its broader efforts to expand housing supply and improve access to homeownership. However, the programme’s impact will also depend on the affordability of the completed homes, the availability of accessible mortgage facilities and the ability of prospective buyers to meet the associated costs.
