This is child abuse- Omoyele Sowore kicks against the use of 10-year-old to carry sacred Osun-Osogbo Calabash

Activist and Presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has kicked against the use of a 10-year-old princess, Alimot Osunbunmi, to carry the sacred Arugba at the Osun-Osogbo Festival holding in Osun State today, August 7.

During the annual procession to the Osun Sacred Grove in Osogbo, Osun State today, Alimot was made to carry the sacred calabash as part of the festival’s ritual. The organisers described her act as ‘’History in making’’ as she is the youngest to have ever carried the sacred calabash.

The young princess was selected through traditional Ifa divination in March 2025 to serve as the new Arugba, succeeding Osuntomi Ewatomi, who held the revered position for about 12 years before her marriage brought her tenure to an end.

Reacting to the use of a 10-year-old to carry the sacred calabash, Sowore argued that she is still a child who cannot expressly give consent.
