There Are Only Two Tribes in Nigeria : The Elites and The Masses – Banji Alabi Esq

….Only Two Tribes Can Shape Nigeria’s Future — Which One Will You Join?”…..

Tribalism and religion are often presented as Nigeria’s biggest challenges, but I believe they are artificial problems manufactured by selfish politicians to serve their own interests. In reality, there are only two tribes in Nigeria:

1. *The elites* – those who hold power, wealth and influence.
2. *The masses* – ordinary citizens whose lives are shaped by the decisions of the elites.

Your tribe is determined by your socioeconomic status, not by your ethnicity.

When elites chase power or elective office they exploit tribal and religious sentiments to sway the masses. This tactic has been used for centuries, as described in the art of war. Unfortunately, once the elites achieve their goals they abandon the masses, leaving them to fight among themselves while they unite in the National/State Assemblies, the Federal Executive Council, and plunder the nation’s wealth.

_When a friend or family member lands a political appointment, they suddenly “belong” to the elite, stop returning your calls, and join the plunder._
### Mubi Attack – A Lesson for All Nigerians
Once upon a time, Mubi, the largest commercial town in Adamawa State, was thrown into chaos when Boko Haram descended on the town. People fled for their lives. Terrorists shot indiscriminately, killing many, while those who could escape jumped into any available vehicle. Christians, Muslims, Igbo, Yoruba, Tiv, Hausa – people of every tribe and religion scrambled onto any car heading out of town. Soldiers clambered onto trucks with civilians, begging to be saved; hundreds who could not find a vehicle ran into the hills.

In their frantic effort to survive, no one asked about religion or ethnicity before offering or seeking help. The community was united by a common enemy, and in that moment ethnicity and religion vanished – only humanity remained. Those climbing the hills stayed together, helping each other stay on their feet.

The most striking part of the story is that the then‑Chief of Defence Staff was a son of Mubi. Reports say that, just hours before the attack, helicopters arrived and evacuated his family from the town. On the day it mattered most, he saved only his relatives and abandoned everyone else, leaving even the soldiers without an inspiring commander to defend their community.

*The lesson:* As a people, all we have is our neighbours. When you need help, you knock on your neighbour’s door. The president, governor, senator or minister will not be there for you. Why then should we fight our neighbours for the sake of a man or woman who cares only about his own family?

Our elites may claim to share our religion or ethnicity, but time and again they have shown they do not care. We have been fools, killing one another over religion and ethnicity while they unite across all divides and plunder our wealth.
### The Real Enemy
– *Politicians* – they thrive on division and then unite to loot the treasury.
– *Poverty* – it fuels endless cycles of violence and despair.

Youths are the worst victims of this power play, losing their lives, dignity and future. It is time for them to recognize that their true enemy is poverty, not other tribes. Rather than relying on government, young people should focus on acquiring skills, learning to provide valuable services, and seizing the huge market of over 270 million Nigerians.

– Don’t wait for government intervention; create your own job.
– Wealth can be generated in every zone, regardless of location.
– No job is too low; idle hands become tools for the real enemy.
– As you grow, keep hope in Nigeria – we are the largest economy in Africa.

Comparing Nigeria to other nations:

– Only two major religions (Christianity and Islam) versus China’s five (Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Islam, Christianity).
– Just three major tribes (Hausa‑Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo) compared with America’s diverse population.

It is time to rethink our priorities and focus on empowering ourselves through skill acquisition. By doing so, we will unlock our true potential and build a brighter future for Nigeria.
