The Only Man Pastor Kumuyi Calls “My Brother.” – The Untold Story of the Friendship Between Pastor W. F. Kumuyi and Pastor E. A. Adeboye.
Long before stadium gates echoed with the cheers of millions, long before satellite television beamed their sermons across continents, the paths of two quiet, academic minds crossed in the bustling corridors of academia.
Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi, the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, share a history rooted not just in faith, but in chalk dust, equations, and a mutual pursuit of intellectual and spiritual truth.
Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye was born on March 2, 1942, in the village of Ifewara, Osun State, Nigeria.
He came from a very humble background, growing up in a poor farming family.

Interestingly, both Pastor E. A. Adeboye and Pastor W. F. Kumuyi hail from the same state, Osun State in southwestern Nigeria.
Adeboye is from Ifewara, while Kumuyi is from Erin-Ijesha.
Coming from the same cultural and geographical root shaped their journeys in several profound ways, aligning their paths long before they built global ministries.
Both men grew up in Yoruba households during an era when extreme discipline, hard work, and academic excellence were viewed as the primary vehicles for progress.
Osun State, and the wider Western Region, had a strong tradition of missionary-planted schools.
This cultural background drove both men to master Western education, conquer mathematics, and eventually attain top-tier academic positions at the university level.
Pastor Adeboye got married to his wife, Foluke Adenike Adeboye (née Adeyokunnu), in 1967, with a court wedding following in September 1967 and a subsequent church celebration.
Together, they have four children: Adeolu, Bolu, Leke, and the late Dare.
Pastor W. F. Kumuyi first got married on September 13, 1980, to his first wife, Abiodun.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, both men were brilliant minds deeply immersed in the world of mathematics.
Adeboye earned his degrees in the discipline, culminating in a PhD in Applied Mathematics, while Kumuyi also graduated with a first-class honours degree in Mathematics.
Their paths converged heavily at the University of Lagos.
Here, they weren’t just passing acquaintances.
They were colleagues working as lecturers in the same Department of Mathematics.
They walked the same halls, breathed the same academic air, and shared an exceptional intellect long before the weight of global ministry rested on their shoulders.
Around 1973, Pastor Adeboye experienced a radical conversion and joined the Redeemed Christian Church of God, which was then a modest local assembly led by its founder, Reverend Josiah Akindayomi.
What many modern observers find surprising is that Pastor Kumuyi’s spiritual journey was tightly intertwined with this same era.
During their days lecturing together at the University of Lagos, both men were burning with a fierce hunger for the Scriptures.
Consequently, Pastor Kumuyi began attending RCCG’s Bible study services alongside Adeboye, sitting under the teachings of Reverend Josiah Akindayomi.
They were comrades in a shared spiritual awakening, studying the Bible together when their respective ministries were still quiet whispers of faith.
Though they eventually stepped out to shoulder two of the largest Pentecostal movements in the world, with Kumuyi founding Deeper Life and Adeboye taking the helm of RCCG, their foundational bond never fractured.
After joining the church in 1973 and becoming a born-again Christian, Adeboye quickly became close to the founder, serving faithfully as his personal interpreter, translating services from Yoruba to English.
He was ordained as a pastor in 1975.
Pastor Adeboye’s ascension to the leadership of the Redeemed Christian Church of God followed a unique and divinely orchestrated path after the founder, Reverend Josiah Akindayomi, passed away in 1981.
Years prior to his death, Reverend Akindayomi stated that he had received a divine revelation regarding his successor, a young, educated man who was initially a newcomer to the church.
Akindayomi designated Pastor Adeboye for the role, writing his name down, recording his intentions, and leaving explicit instructions regarding his succession.
When first told that he would be the next General Overseer, Adeboye initially resisted and wrote a letter declining the massive responsibility, feeling he was too young and inexperienced compared to older, foundational members.
However, after being deeply moved by Akindayomi’s loving response and feeling bound by divine instruction, he accepted the call.
Following Reverend Akindayomi’s passing in November 1980, the founder’s sealed succession notes and instructions were formally read to the church leadership.
Pastor Adeboye was officially installed and prayed for as the new leader on January 20, 1981, at the age of 39, changing his title from General Superintendent to General Overseer.
While Pastor Kumuyi stepped out to start his Bible Study Group at Flat 2 with just 15 members on August 3, 1973, it was later formally established as the Deeper Christian Life Ministry in the early 1980s as the movement grew rapidly.
Today, both spearhead massive global Pentecostal giants originating from Nigeria.
However, they operate on different structural scales due to their distinct administrative models.
Over the decades, they have maintained a quiet, deep-seated mutual respect.
They have crossed denominational lines to honor one another at milestone events, collaborate on Kingdom advancement, and publicly recognize each other’s distinct graces.
Adeboye has openly lauded Kumuyi as one of the greatest Bible teachers of our generation, while their shared history remains a rare testament to enduring friendship, academic excellence, and spiritual steadfastness.
