Terrorists Issue Bomb Threat to Nigeria’s National Assembly — Rep Garba Muhammad Discloses

Terrorists have issued threats to bomb the National Assembly, according to a committee of House of Representatives members.

During a public hearing on Tuesday, Garba Muhammad, the chairman of the committee on internal security, discussed this alarming situation. The hearing focused on a proposed bill to create a legislative security directorate, which will set qualifications and service conditions for the sergeant-at-arms and other staff.

Muhammad emphasized the importance of security for all government branches, particularly the legislative arm. He pointed out that the National Assembly sees a daily influx of people, including legislators, staff, and protesters. This large crowd creates opportunities for criminals to infiltrate and engage in illegal activities.

The assembly has faced numerous security issues, including car and motorcycle thefts, vandalism, fake identity cards, and unauthorized access by visitors. There have also been threats from both terrorists and protesters, raising concerns about safety. Legislators are vulnerable to risks as constituents can easily access their offices without appointments.

He warned that ongoing security issues could disrupt legislative functions, leading to a lack of representation and oversight, as well as hindering budget processes and plenary sessions. This disruption could destabilize democracy and the nation.

Muhammad stated that effective security management requires a comprehensive approach, integrating various elements to ensure a secure environment for legislative activities. He stressed the need for the proposed bill to address these challenges and adopt best practices in parliamentary security. He urged state assemblies to implement similar security measures.
