Tambuwal reveals position on Obi-Kwankwaso Tussle with Atiku Abubakar over ADC ticket
Former governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal has weighed in on the rising tension in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over who will emerge the party’s presidential candidate for 2027.
While prominent opposition leaders united on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with the aim of defeating the incumbent Nigeria president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the fate of the coalition party hangs in balance due to competition for the party’s presidential ticket which appears to be fragmenting the party’s supporters and membership.
Public affair commentators have suggested that the coalition party is likely going to suffer self-injury if its presidential primary election is not meticulously handled as aggrieved presidential aspirants would likely exit the party or work against the party in the presidential election.
Hence, reacting to this internal competition especially over the ADC presidential ticket, Aminu Tambuwal described it as being part of political party’s internal democracy. He explained that if the party fails to determine its presidential candidate through consensus, it will go through direct primary election as mandated by the 2026 electoral act.

If there is consensus, that is a legitimate outcome. However, if consensus cannot be achieved, we have party primaries,” he stated.
The former Sokoto state governor also accused the APC government of instigating internal crises in opposition political parties, hoping to weaken the political parties and make them unable to field candidates in 2027. He described the influence of the APC government in opposition parties as similar to the pattern of former Nigerian military dictator, Sani Abacha.
What we are witnessing is a pattern where opposition parties are persistently weakened by internal crises, while the ruling party appears to remain relatively stable.
When you observe the frequency and intensity of crises within opposition parties, you begin to see a pattern that raises serious questions”, he stated.
Tambuwal however stated that the 2027 general elections will be different as it will be a faceoff between the ruling party and the Nigerian masses.
What I meant is that the political dynamics leading up to 2027 are shaping up. It is increasingly becoming a contest between those in positions of power and the general population,”
