Suspected cultist fleeing police arrest slumps, dies in Ogun

A suspected cultist identified as Damola has slumped and died while allegedly fleeing police arrest in the Kajola area of Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.

PUNCH Metro learnt on Sunday that the incident occurred last Sunday while the deceased, alongside other suspected cultists, allegedly ambushed a man.

Our correspondent learnt on Sunday from an X post by a counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, that the victim who was ambushed had earlier reported a threat to life to the police.

Makama noted that police operatives had received the intelligence that the victim was ambushed, prompting them to storm the area.

The deceased suspect and his colleagues were said to have fled upon sighting the police.

He wrote, “Following intelligence gathered by the police, investigators established that the complainant had allegedly been ambushed by suspected cult members in the Kajola area.

“Police operatives mobilised to the location and arrested one of the suspected cultists, identified as Oluwatimileyin Daniel, while other members of the group reportedly fled.

“One of the fleeing suspects, identified as Damola, reportedly collapsed while attempting to evade arrest and was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.”

He noted that the death reportedly triggered tension and chaos in the community, prompting security personnel to strengthen their presence in the area.

Confirming the incident in a telephone conversation with our correspondent, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Police Command, Opeyemi Oluborode, noted that an investigation has commenced.

“We are aware of this case. A very diligent investigation is currently ongoing to ascertain the facts of the matter,” he said.

PUNCH Metro reported on July 11 that the Lagos State Police Command arrested five suspected cultists terrorising the Apapa, Ijora, and Badia areas of the state.

The operatives had also recovered weapons and suspected hard drugs during the operation.
