Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has defended the Federal Government’s handling of security challenges following the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in the Ogbomoso area of Oyo State.
Speaking during an interview on MukTV, Omokri argued that it is unrealistic to expect the Federal Government to station security personnel at every school across the country. He maintained that while the government has a responsibility to provide security, it cannot physically protect every educational institution in Nigeria’s vast network of schools.
The former presidential aide urged Nigerians to avoid placing sole responsibility for every security breach on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing that security is a collective responsibility involving federal, state, and local authorities as well as communities.
According to Omokri, the recent kidnapping incident in Oyo State is a tragic reminder of the complex security challenges facing the nation. However, he noted that the Federal Government has continued to invest in intelligence gathering, military operations, and other security measures aimed at tackling criminal activities across the country.
His comments come amid growing public outrage over the abduction of dozens of pupils and teachers from schools in the Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for stronger security around schools and other vulnerable public institutions.
Omokri further emphasized that while citizens have the right to demand accountability from government officials, security challenges should be viewed within the broader context of Nigeria’s size, population, and evolving threats from criminal groups operating in different parts of the country.
